Autumn is here, and you know what that means: falling leaves, football tailgates, and, of course, the release of our annual 2016 Recruiter Nation Report. Now in its ninth year, the 2016 Recruiter Nation Report gathered responses from over 1,600 recruiting and human resources professionals to get a pulse on the labor market and find out what makes recruiters tick.

The gist of this year’s report indicates that the labor market is healthy and growing — a nice change of pace from a few years back. Almost 70 percent of recruiters surveyed report increased hiring in the last year, with 33 percent expecting to fill 100 or more positions in the coming year. For job seekers, fear of automation and layoffs has been high in the past (earlier this year, 55 percent of them were at least slightly worried about their jobs becoming obsolete) — but recruiters don’t agree. Just 10 percent of recruiters anticipate automating jobs in the next 2-3 years, and 86 percent of them don’t anticipate making any layoffs in the next 12 months.

The market is ripe with opportunity for job seekers — and that means that things are getting even more competitive for recruiters on the other side of the coin. In 2017, 95 percent of recruiters expect that bringing in top talent will be as or more difficult than the previous year. So no matter their industry, recruiters are getting creative about how they find, entice, and ultimately hire top talent. Between offering new and creative benefits, investing in their employment brand, and leveraging social media, savvy recruiters are employing a variety of tactics to help their companies stand out from the crowd.

But just because recruiters are in a bind to fill open positions doesn’t mean that job seekers are off the hook. Qualification and cultural fit are still as important as ever — and so are things like personal presentation and social media. (Hint: Posting that emotional rant to Facebook might just cost you your dream job!)

Even after the interview process is done, candidates still need to bring their “A” game. More and more recruiters are taking part in the onboarding process, and they’re keeping track of how their new hires perform. In fact, post-hire metrics (like performance and retention rate) are becoming more important to recruiters than data from the hiring process itself (such as cost- and time-to-hire).
