What is the Recruiting Process?

Recruiting involves sourcing, engaging, interviewing, and hiring new employees. The goal is to hire the best talent for the role and best fit for your culture. The recruiting process is different for every organization, but it typically includes these steps:

  1. Identify recruiting needs  – Evaluate your company’s needs in a new employee. What is this role going to be when someone starts? Where will it be in five years? These kinds of questions can give you a good start on recruiting for a role.
  2. Write a job description – No matter if it’s a well-established role in your organization or a brand new one, always update the job description before posting! Look at your identified needs for the role and check for bias in your job description using tools like Jobvite’s Job Description Grader.
  3. Identify  the  hiring  team  responsibilities - Decide what team members across the recruiting and hiring teams need to be included in the process. Identify who will conduct interviews, who will be part of the decision-making process, and who else needs to be included.
  4. Start sourcing candidates – Start posting jobs on job boards, your career site, and other favorite channels. If applicable, post the job internally before posting it publicly to give employees a chance to apply or refer their network. Employee referrals are a great way to expand your talent pool and get a warm referral for a candidate.
  5. Screen candidates – Begin the screening process by conducting phone screens or even offer video interviewing as an option for candidates to complete at their convenience. This process allows recruiters to screen candidates for cultural and role fit before continuing to the interview rounds.
  6. Interview  – Interviews can be done in person or virtually – either by phone or video call. This important step to the recruiting process can have several parts, depending on your process. Some companies have anywhere from 1-5 interviews before deciding on a candidate.
  7. Evaluate  –  After interviews are completed, your team will evaluate candidates. This can be a great way to utilize your ATS to allow team members to leave their opinions and experiences with each candidate.
  8. Hire  – Once your candidate has been selected, you will generate an offer for them. Sometimes this step in the process involves negotiations or budget reviews for salary and benefits before officially hiring an employee.
  9. Onboard  – This is a crucial step for making your employee feel welcome and prepared to start their role. The key to great onboarding lies in starting right after an offer is accepted, rather than on day one for an employee. Allow them to learn about your culture in the days leading up to their start date so they feel welcome and ready.

How Do You Do Virtual Recruitment?

After the shift of 2020 towards remote work, virtual recruiting isn’t going away. It provides a safe and effective way to interview and screen candidates while still benefiting from face-to-face contact. Virtual recruiting can save time early in the recruitment process when a team is still screening candidates for a position. Utilize things like automated messaging, video interviews, and video calls to communicate with candidates and progress the hiring process.

Can Recruiters Work Remotely?

In today’s world of technology and virtual meetings – many jobs can be done completely remote. Recruiting is all about making valuable connections with talent networks and finding the right fit for everyone. Recruiters are finding that they are able to make valuable connections at virtual recruiting events and are utilizing technology to recruit better.
