What the Rise in AI-Powered Candidate Fraud Really Means for TA Teams

TL;DR: AI didn’t just change the hiring game—it completely rewrote the rules. But with new benefits came new challenges. Specifically: candidate fraud.  

Almost overnight, TA pros were left to grapple with one big question: how do we effectively weed out the fraudulent candidates without creating a verification process so rigid that it ends up pushing qualified candidates away? 

Here’s what works:  

  • Identify where risk actually exists in your funnel. 
  • Add layered controls (the “Swiss cheese” approach). 
  • Clearly state the line between acceptable AI use and misrepresentation. 
  • Be transparent with candidates about safeguards. 
  • Treat fraud prevention as an ongoing strategy—not a one-time fix. 

Candidate fraud in 2006: 
Exaggerated titles. “Polished” accomplishments. The occasional embellishment.  

Candidate fraud in 2026: 
AI-generated resumes. Deepfake interviews. Identity theft. Crowdsourced cheating. 

Look back even one year and candidate fraud? Barely a blip on the radar. The occasional bad actors existed, but all-in-all, candidate fraud wasn’t top of mind for TA teams.  

Today, it’s an entirely different conversation. And recruiters are bearing the brunt of that shift—now tasked with not only finding a perfect-fit candidate, but determining whether that candidate is:  

  1. A real person. 
  1. Actually qualified. 
  1. Has the same skills in real life that they’ve listed on their resume. 

But there’s another layer: 

This isn’t just about catching candidates who are unqualified. It’s also about identifying candidates who shouldn’t be in your systems in the first place. 

In more extreme cases, that can mean individuals intentionally misrepresenting their identity or intent to gain access to sensitive data or infrastructure. 

Managing all of that? It’s a tall order. 

And it is exactly why Employ’s Chief People Officer Stephanie Manzelli recently sat down with Dara Brenner (Chief Product Officer at Employ), Taylor Liggett (Chief Growth Officer at ID.me), and Laura Mazzullo (Owner of East Side Staffing) for a fireside chat.  

Their conversation covered a lot of ground—from why candidate fraud is so much harder to detect in today’s hiring landscape to what teams can do to protect their hiring pipeline without creating unnecessary hurdles for their qualified applicants. And we get into all of it in this article.  

1. Why is Candidate Fraud Harder to Detect Now? 

To answer this question, we have to understand some of the dynamics at play within the hiring landscape.  

At the 30,000-foot level, the rise in AI has made candidate fraud more scalable, more widespread, and much more sophisticated. And that’s showing up in some clear ways:  

At the same time, the shift to remote work (and hiring) removed many of the natural checkpoints that once helped verify whether a candidate was who they said they were. 

As Taylor pointed out: 

“The employment infrastructure was never built for identity…it just didn’t have the controls in place that it needed to.” 

While Laura noted that a general shift within the HR and TA function compounded these challenges: 

And TA teams are feeling the pressure—from the top of the funnel to the very bottom. 

2. So, What’s the Difference Between Acceptable AI Use and Misrepresentation? 

As AI becomes more embedded in hiring—on both sides of the interview table—the line between acceptable use and misrepresentation is getting harder (and more important) to define. Because the truth is, not all AI use is a red flag. And in many roles, it’s actually a desired skill.  

As Dara noted: 

“People are going to be hiring candidates because of their AI skills…” 

Using AI to structure a resume, refine messaging, or prepare for an interview, for instance, can signal adaptability and efficiency. Traits that many hiring teams want to see in a potential new hire. The line gets crossed when AI starts doing more than supporting the candidate—when it replaces their skills, experience, or ability to actually do the work. 

And as Taylor points out in the clip below, this isn’t just an issue for the hiring teams: 

So, what is the answer? It comes down to defining where the boundary sits for your organization and being transparent about it. What’s acceptable will vary based on the role, expectations, and how AI is used internally. 

3. Looking Ahead 12–24 Months, What’s the Single Most Important Shift Talent Leaders Should Make Right Now to Stay Ahead of Candidate Fraud? 

Here’s the reality: candidate fraud isn’t a static problem—and it won’t be solved with a single solution. As Dara put it, the moment you build a better trap, you get smarter mice. 

As Taylor explained, it all starts with understanding where your specific risks actually exist: 

“Where are my pain points…and where can I insert controls that reduce those issues?” 

Over the next 12–24 months, the teams that get this right will treat fraud detection as an ongoing strategy—not a one-time fix. 

In practice, that means: 

Focusing your effort where the risk actually exists 
Not every stage of the hiring process carries the same level of risk. Instead of adding friction everywhere, focus on the points throughout the process where it matters most.  

Remember the “Swiss Cheese” methodology: The strongest teams think in layers, building safeguards across the funnel that work together instead of relying on a single checkpoint to catch everything. 

Being clear about why you’re adding extra steps 
As Laura pointed out, transparency goes a long way with candidates. When you explain what you’re asking for, how the information will be used, and how it protects both sides, it builds trust instead of creating hesitation. 

Working closely with the right partners 
No team is solving this alone. From your ATS to background screening and identity verification providers, the tools in your stack need to work together—and share signals—so you’re not operating in silos. The goal isn’t just more technology, it’s better coordination across the systems you already rely on. 

Continuously reassessing your approach 
What works today likely won’t be enough tomorrow. The teams that stay ahead are regularly evaluating their process, identifying new pressure points, and adjusting as candidate behavior—and technology—evolves. 

Even when all of this is done well, it can still feel like added friction—for candidates and for teams. 

But as Laura shared, that friction isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s often part of building a more secure and trustworthy process. 

She compared it to her own personal experience getting Global Entry: 

What felt tedious upfront actually became incredibly valuable in the long run. The same is true in hiring. 

When safeguards are applied thoughtfully—and clearly communicated—candidates begin to see them differently. Not as unnecessary hurdles, but as part of a process that protects everyone involved. 

The New Reality of Hiring 

Hiring today is about so much more than just fighting fraud. But when you’re dealing with high application volume, deepfakes, and people actively trying to game the system, it can start to feel a little like an impossible game of whack-a-mole.  

The reality is, there isn’t one fix that makes it all go away. Chasing every new tactic or trying to block every possible risk isn’t the answer. Building systems and processes that hold up under pressure is. 

That means getting intentional about where you add friction and where you remove it. It means designing a process that naturally surfaces the right signals over time. And it means understanding that trust isn’t something you layer on later. It has to be there from the beginning.
